We are now more than half way through the 5+ year process of planning, designing and delivering the new Tweed Valley Hospital. Significant progress has been made since the announcement of funding for a new hospital for the Tweed-Byron region in June 2017.
The Tweed Valley Hospital site on Cudgen Rd opposite the TAFE NSW Kingscliff campus was acquired by the NSW Government on 2 November 2018. Leading up to this, a comprehensive site selection process was undertaken and the summary of this process and the outcomes is included in the
Site Selection Summary Report
.
The
master plan for the hospital campus
and
design of the hospital buildings
have been prepared by the architectural and engineering design team, in collaboration with clinicians, operational staff, community members and government agencies.
The NSW Government approved the Stage 1 State Significant Development (SSD) application for the new Tweed Valley Hospital on 11 June 2019,
following extensive community and government agency consultation.
The determination is available on the
Department of Planning, Industry and Environment website
. This approved the concept proposal for the new hospital and early construction works to prepare the site.
The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment approved Modification 2 to new Tweed Valley Hospital - concept proposal on 29 April 2020. The modifications include: New building envelopes for a multi-deck car park and temporary building; increased number of hospital beds; changes to existing building envelopes; increase floor area to 65,050 sqm, relocation of electrical switching station kiosk and revised landscaping. FUrther infomration is available on the
Major Projects
website.
The Stage 2 State Significant Development application was approved on 12 June 2020 by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment following a public exhibition period that closed in November 2019.
The determination is available on the
Department of Planning, Industry and Environment website
and provides approval for the design, construction and commissioning of the hospital buildings.
The new Tweed Valley Hospital is on track to open to patients in 2023.
The journey ahead
Early works commenced on the site in July 2019 to prepare the site for construction of the hospital buildings. Construction activity is well progressed with earthworks shaping the site and preparing the footprint of the main hospital building and foundations. Permanent and temporary roadworks are also being completed to create new entrances to the site and access for construction vehicles around the site.
Main works will commence on the site once consent conditions for the Stage 2 planning approval are satisfied. The main construction works are anticipated to commence end of 2020, with the new hospital due to open to patients in 2023.
