We are nearly half way through the 5+ year process of planning, designing and delivering the new Tweed Valley Hospital. Significant progress has been made following the announcement of funding for a new hospital for the Tweed-Byron region in June 2017.
The Tweed Valley Hospital site on Cudgen Rd opposite Kingscliff TAFE was acquired by the NSW Government on 2 November 2018. Leading up to this, a comprehensive site selection process was undertaken and the summary of this process and the outcomes is included in the
Site Selection Summary Report
.
The
master plan for the hospital campus
and
design of the hospital buildings
have been prepared by the architectural and engineering design team, in collaboration with clinicians, operational staff, community members and government agencies.
The NSW Government approved the Stage 1 State Significant Development (SSD) application for the new Tweed Valley Hospital on 11 June 2019,
following extensive community and government agency consultation.
The determination is available on the
Department of Planning, Industry and Environment website
. This approved the concept proposal for the new hospital and early construction works to prepare the site.
The Stage 2 State Significant Development application was lodged with the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment on 27 September 2019 and the following public exhibition period closed on 8 November 2019. However, the application can still be viewed on the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment website.

to find out more. This application seeks approval for the design, construction and commissioning of the hospital buildings.
We are on track to complete the new Tweed Valley Hospital before the end of 2022 and be open for patients in 2023.
The journey ahead
Early works commenced on the site in July 2019 to prepare the site for construction of the hospital buildings. Construction activity is well underway with earthworks shaping the site and preparing the footprint of the main hospital building and foundations. Roadworks are also underway to create new entrances to the site and access for construction vehicles around the site.
Public exhibition of the Stage 2 State Significant Development application closed on 8 November 2019. Health Infrastructure will now review all the community and government agency submissions received by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment and will produce a Response to Submissions Report.
The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment will consider the Stage 2 State Significant Development application, the Response to Submissions Report and all community and agency submissions, prior to a determination being made on the application.
Main works will commence on the site once planning approvals are in place and consent conditions satisfied, with the new hospital due to be completed before the end of 2022 and open to patients in 2023.
